Extreme space-weather events such as geomagnetic storms are natural phenomena caused by solar activity that can have a serious impact on modern technological infrastructures such as electrical power grids, telecommunication, global satellite navigation (GNSS) and banking.

Wireless communication plays an irreplaceable role in emergency and disaster relief situations. The enhancement of communication networks and devices used by Public Safety officers can reduce the loss of human lives and improve the security of all citizens. Some of the current limitations of public safety systems in emergency and disaster relief scenarios are (1) Lack of network capacity in emergency scenarios, (2) Lack of interoperability and (3) Lack of support for broadband data rates.

The execution of security preparedness exercises has been identified as a priority at both national and international level since they can train the operators of Critical Infrastructures and test the procedures that are followed during contingencies. Such tests could reveal important details that can negatively affect detection, coordination and response capabilities.

First pan-European cyber-security simulation

Europe's cyber security experts are putting their skills to the test today in the first ever pan-European exercise. In "Cyber Europe 2010", experts will try counter simulated attempts by hackers to paralyse critical online services in several EU Member States. The event is organised by EU Member States with support from the European Network Security Agency (ENISA) and the JRC's Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen (IPSC).
